">Many other concerns are related to the dysfunctional regulatory environment, the accreditation system that has low coverage and characterized with absence of incentives for performing well and the unjust public funding policies. There are genuine concerns about many of private institutions being substandard and exploitative. Due to the government’s ambivalence on the role of private sector in MBA, the growth has been chaotic and unplanned. The regulatory system has not maintained standards or check exploitation. Instead, it resulted in erecting formidable entry barriers that generate undesirable rents. Voluntary accreditation seems to have no takers from amongst private providers and apparently serves little purpose for any of its stakeholders. Despite, its impressive growth, MBA in India could maintain only a very small base of quality institutions at the top. Standards of the majority of the Institutions are poor and declining. There are a large number of small and non-viable Institutions. Entry to the small number of quality institutions is very competitive giving rise to high stake entrance tests and a flourishing private tuition industry. The stakes are so high that quota-based reservation of seats in such institutions in the name of affirmative action has come to occupy centre stage in electoral politics. Despite some merit, it has resulted in fragmentation of merit space and further intensified competition for the limited capacity in quality institutions. While public funding declined (in real terms), enrolments in MBA institutions grew to meet the surge in demand. This further deteriorated academic standards. As a result, the institutions were forced to raise their tuition fees to sustain themselves. Emergence of private providers and increase in tuition fees in public institutions without any substantial programme for students’ financial aid has made MBA beyond the reach of the poor. The paper discusses feasible strategies to overcome this and make MBA affordable and accessible to all. This paper takes a comprehensive look at the various facets of MBA in India. It adopts a systems approach for achieving policy coherence and multi-level coordination required to address genuine concerns about management education in India.

<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt; Increases in productivity through the adoption of more efficient and cleaner technologies in the manufacturing sector will be most effective in merging economic, environmental, and social development objectives. A historical examination of productivity growth in India’s industries embedded into a broader analysis of structural composition and policy changes will help identify potential future development strategies that lead towards a more sustainable development path.

Issues of productivity growth and patterns of substitution in the fertilizer sector as well as in other energy intensive industries in India have been discussed from various perspectives. Historical estimates vary from indicating an improvement to a decline in the sector’s productivity. The variation depends mainly on the time period considered, the source of data, the type of indices and econometric specifications used for reporting productivity growth. Regarding patterns of substitution most analyses focus on interfuel substitution possibilities in the context of rising energy demand. Not much research has been conducted on patterns of substitution among the primary and secondary input factors:

Capital, labour, energy and materials. However, analyzing the use and substitution possibilities of these factors as well as identifying the main drivers of productivity growth among these and other factors is of special importance for understanding technological and overall development of an industry.

Download Fertilizer industry report here

Indian Insurance Industry - An Insight

The insurance industry in India has come a long way since the time when businesses were tightly regulated and concentrated in the hands of a few public sector insurers. Following the passage of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act in 1999, India abandoned public sector exclusivity in the insurance industry in favor of market-driven competition. This shift has brought about major changes to the industry. The inauguration of a new era of insurance development has seen the entry of international insurers, the proliferation of innovative products and distribution channels, and the raising of supervisory standards.

In 2003, the Indian insurance market ranked 19th globally and was the fifth largest in Asia. Although it accounts for only 2.5% of premiums in Asia, it has the potential to become one of the biggest insurance markets in the region. A combination of factors underpins further strong growth in the market, including sound economic fundamentals, rising household wealth and a further improvement in the regulatory framework.

By mid-2004, the number of insurers in India had been augmented by the entry of new private sector players to a total of 28, up from five before liberalization. A range of new products had been launched to cater to different segments of the market, while traditional agents were supplemented by other channels including the Internet and bank branches. These developments were instrumental in propelling business growth, in real terms, of 19% in life premiums and 11.1% in non-life premiums between 1999 and 2003.

There are good reasons to expect that the growth momentum can be sustained. In particular, there is huge untapped potential in various segments of the market. While the nation is heavily exposed to natural catastrophes, insurance to mitigate the negative financial consequences of these adverse events is underdeveloped. The same is true for both pension and health insurance, where insurers can play a critical role in bridging demand and supply gaps. Major changes in both national economic policies and insurance regulations will highlight the prospects of these segments going forward.

The objective of this report is to explore the market structure, opportunities and challenges lying in Indian insurance industry and compare it with the Global insurance industry.

Download InsuranceIndustryReport.pdf Here

India is Best - Atithi Devobhava

This is one of article from TOI written by CHIDANAND RAJGHATTA.

this clearly shows the travel trend of India.
Friends, India is the greatest country in this world and Everyone should not miss even a single chance of visiting India.
I feel proud to be born n brought up in this great nation.

Article:
------------

The United States has replaced the United Kingdom as the country sending the largest number of tourists to India, according to India’s tourism ministry. Some 799,000 Americans — around 15% of India’s five million inflow in 2007 — visited hamara bharat mahaan, edging ahead of 796,000 British guests. According to US Commerce Department, more Americans came to India last year than went to Ireland or Thailand. Let’s hope a couple of them check into the visitor’s gallery of the Lok Sabha on Tuesday to see the ‘nucular’ fireworks in our Parliament.
Among several reasons more Americans are trooping in to India is the weak dollar, which is taking a pounding against most currencies but hanging tough against the rupee. New non-stop flights to India help. While many parts of the world are considered unsafe for Americans, India is kosher, notwithstanding the danger of getting run over by our Formula None maniacs on what passes for roads. Delhi Belly, too, is better than lead in the belly. Then there is the fringe benefit of having the mind and body fixed at one of our ashrams, spas, hospitals etc for a fraction of what it costs in the broken US healthcare system.
American tourists are typically caricatured as loud, brash, and culturally insensitive — wearing a florid Hawaii-an shirt, oversized shorts, sunglasses and straw hat, if one extends the hyperbole. My experience doesn’t match that picture. Most Americans i know are simple, decent, generous, uncomplicated folk — like Adam, a friend who decided to visit India after watching the movie Taal. Efforts to convince him that Indian villages were not teeming with Aishwarya Rai lookalikes didn’t dissuade him. Off he went backpacking into the boonies. La Rai eluded him, but he returned with other lifelong attachments that have made him a repeat visitor.
East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet, said Kipling. But Twain, Mark Twain that is, did meet East. The great American writer visited the region centuries after legendary explorers, itinerants, and travelers like Marco Polo, Ibn Batuta, Hsien Tsang, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier and others. Like many, Twain gushed about India, but his perspective is American, and more recent.
Here are some excerpts from Twain’s travelogue, ‘Following the Equator’ — ‘‘This is indeed India; the land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendor and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence...the country of a thousand nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of tradition... the one sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for alien prince and alien peasant, for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, bond and free, the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the globe combined...Its marvels are its own; the patents cannot be infringed; imitations are not possible.’’
Rather overwrought, huh? Americans aren’t as verbose or eloquent (your call) now. A US general, who was asked to surrender by an Axis commander, is said to have responded with one word — ‘‘Nuts.’’ Asked about their India experience, Americans encapsulate Twain’s sentiment with a single word — ‘‘Wow.’’ Follow up and ask them ‘‘Wow good or wow bad?’’ and they’ll say, ‘‘Wow good and wow crazy.’’ Welcome to India, folks; may your tribe increase, even if the nuclear deal goes into deep freeze.

------------

To All Indian: India can attract much more tourists than current figures, only thing we need to do is follow old Indian culture of "Atithi Devobhava".

TOPA nites@NITIE

Hi friends,

We had a great session of TOPA(Theatre of Performing Arts) in last three nites. Its something which could be regarded as the one of the best Ice breaker between seniors & juniors and also b/w juniors.
We were given some topics and a random group of 6 people each. The topics were of double meaning but we were expected to do some innovation and come up with a decent skit ( Although not everyone came up with decent one).
but overall it was a great session with a lot of chocolates thrown in between. We had a number of good performances(including mine off course) and based on the performance here seniors will shortlist a group for the the cultural committee of NITIE.
from tmrw we have the presentations from other committees as well. I will update the info ASAP.

First Night Out@Mumbai

Today was my 1st nite out in mumbai streets. I along with my 4 other friends visited a number of places today off course for the 1st time.
After being in mumbai for 10 days today was the 1st day oops night when we actually realized that we are in the most happening city of India. We started our journey from vihar lake(nitie), went to Andheri then took Local to Church gate and then walked till MARINE DRIVE(the walking place of almost all industrialists and bollywood stars). We walked from there till CHAUPATI beach. That was really wonderfull experience of walking in the sea side road with small rain droplets falling and cold breeze flowing. It was far better than any artificial AC rooms.
Chaupati beach was not up to our expectations, it was very dirty mainly bcoz of the food stalls outside it. We all had the famous mumbai PAV BHAJI and BARF KA GOLA[:)].
Came back to hostel in early morning.

Next to see: Gate way of India

Experience@NITIE

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Yes thats exactly what happened to us. Though our official classes started from Monday(23rd) only We were doing case studies, ppts and all other Group stuff for last 4 days and anyone could hardly sleep in those days. All this was arranged by our seniors as our induction program. We had a lot of group games in nights as well as in early morning. Now that really S**Ks, working til 4-5 am on ppt and then get up at 6:30am to play some games. but i would say even then it was such a planned that we enjoyed most of the activities. Yeah, on the 3rd day only a few people could wake up for morning games[;)].
On the case study part, We had marketing as well as Finance case studies. We had one B-Plan as well.
Finally, after 3 rigorous induction days, we had our classes started on monday. Classes were good in general although I could understand very little from those. I need to work harder as I was the one sleeping in all classes(bachpan se hi prob hai class me sone ki).
In between classes we also had some sessions from different committees of NITIE.
That's my first week @NITIE.
I am attaching some fotos of nitie showing the scenic beauty available here.

bbye

The Great Indian IT industry

Hi All,

I am again that 'another IT professional' from 'The Great Indian IT industry'.

Please don’t feel dishearten if my metaphors are hurting you guys but I can't control it anymore. I have been a part of this industry for more than 2 years now. Like everyone else I too joined TCS with a lot of dreams n expectations in my mind. Like everyone else I too wanted to use technologies to enhance life of others. Like everyone else I too wanted to earn money as well as fame for making this world a better place to live in. and finally like everyone else after some time in the industry all my dreams scattered like the pearls of a broken chain. Even now when I retrospect it make me feel wet eyes. Frankly speaking no one in 'The Great Indian IT industry' can say that they are in IT industry rather everyone will agree that they are actually working in a garbage collection company which collects garbage work from US/UK clients and states that we are in global top 10 IT companies league. Yes, you guess it right I am focussing on TCS. Being an active part of this largest IT Company of Asia I want all of you to have some insight in the working of TCS. TCS is not famous in its client as the largest IT company of Asia or the best company to work in (as TCS always claims to be the best employer of India) rather TCS is famous for the cheapest company which can do any type of work at a very cheap price and will abide by all their regulations without even considering any inconvenience it may cause to its own employees. We in TCS do all the garbage work which no other company wants to do like call centre type production support, Documentation, Audit reporting to name a few. It’s not that like that these clients doesn’t have good technical/consultancy work but these type of whole work is being done by truly consulting companies like Accenture, IBM, EDS etc. Although as per name TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) is also a consultancy company but you will never find this company in any consultancy project.

I am not against the Indian development in any case but I do feel that we as an Indian can do much better than what these companies are providing with. We are one of best minds in the world but what we are doing is not the best work, definitely. I want to change this and everything related to it.

I am not saying that this IT industry has not given anything to us but now it’s the time to change the philosophy of it. In a time when US is said to be going through recession when Indian IT companies should actually come up with a strong competitor of big IT giants, Indian IT failed to get the advantage. Every company is repeating the same words, client is not willing to pay but they should go to the next level of industry and ask their big clients for the bigger project which they are doing with IBM, Accenture etc and provide them a competitive rates. In this way they not even sustain their old small projects rather they could also get a pie of big IT projects. But no one especially TCS is seems to pay heed to this advice from different experts. In fact Infy n Satyam have started to try out the big consulting area and they are also getting little success over there.

Another biggest problem TCS and other Indian companies are facing is the quality HR and attrition. Now looking this issue at a deeper level, the question arises why one person would leave job in TCS and join another company. Firstly, at a time when Inflation in India is at its peak TCS has started cutting salaries and have started several measures to get more money from their employees like increasing Transport charges for office buses etc. The amount of money TCS has deducted from the salary may be very less but it will definitely leads to insecurity and less satisfaction. Persons having good capabilities would rather join another company. Another reason is that although these big Indian companies says that ‘Respect for Individual’ is in their values they will never respect you as an individual, in fact you will be treated as another Employee Id. Companies having much more human resources will treat you more respectfully and thus more satisfaction in their employees. Although Tata group is famous for their ethics, TCS on the other hand uses all ‘unethical’ measures to get advantage from their employees. In no other IT company you can find timings for coffee machine working and go through a workflow process to get as small thing as Rs 5.00/- pen. I don’t understand how much money a $5b company would save from saving a 5 rupee pen. They will call their employees on Saturdays and Sundays in case of extra work but won’t start the ACs in the office because there are not enough employees in the office to recover the AC running cost, now imagine the mind set of that person who has ruined his weekends to get the work done for TCS and in return he has to work in the office without even AC on.

It is not my frustration about TCS or any other IT companies but it is the truth behind the scene.

I have already left IT industry for my higher education.

Best of luck for everybody.

Reg,

Yet Another Software Engineer.

Bday wishes From one of my friend

Friends,

Today is my bday and also last week of my kolkata life. I am leaving for NITIE, Mumbai for 2 year MBA programme.

I got an email from one of my friend, my roommate and much more......

juz wanna share this from all you:

-------------------------------------------

It will be unjustified to say that I did not guessed, that I will enjoy the vicinity of Chandan. And perhaps that is why,I guess he wil missed a lot,in his absence.

There are no striking features as such, about him.I mean to say the same old next door guy, with below average wisdom combined with above average intelligence (That was a loke OKK???) but the most striking thing which is contained very well,is the amount of depth he carries in almost all of his activities.

It has been good two odd weeks,I have been with him and nowhere at any point of time, I found that he is not justifying with what he is doing.

For me it has been a nice learning curve so far and may be that is why I feel how much important and difficult is to carry his leagacy further.

Laboni Labs, the brainchild of this all time fun loving creature will miss its inventor, while at the same time testing its new generation of people, who have more to prove than to be written about.

Well,it is then a part of the package, today we celebrate his becoming a part of a cohort which is distinguished by its sheer uniqueness and exclusiveness, today we celebrate his birth anniversary,we celebrate his getting rid of the place, which he never desserved,we celebrate the transformation and reconcilliation he has brought inbetween his thoughts and real life.

We celebrate all this with a pain in our heart, that he will no longer be the sheet anchor in our small, insignifiacnt and worthless (Okkk seemingly worthless!!!) group, which he has shaped in such a way that his presence if more felt by his absence in that.He will no longer be that light which has enlighted us for quite some time.He will be nowhere around us.

But then, thinking all this would be being selfish about oneself.

One thing is for sure, He will be missed if not by me,then by someone who has seen the other part of him.If not by someone then by someone else who has now got the idea of power of human courage and conviction.

I am not finding a proper ending to this writing, may be beacuse I have a lot to say, infact had a lot to say too....

One thing which I can assure,on my part,is that ,your leagacy in that legendary Laboni Labs will not be diminshed. It will be a source of inspiration and joy for me.And it will continue to push towards the higher realms of life.

Do not know about you but ,surely I would like to meet you later.

I do not have enough strength to write.
Whatever I have become and I would(someday) , I owe a major part to my friends.
I want to introduce all of you to some of my great friends.

Shilpi: Yes she is my best friend whom I can rely upon at any point of time in my life. She is the one who actually plays multiple roles in my life. She is my teacher when it comes to studies. She is my mentor in all my personal matters. She is my role model when it comes to emotions and behavior. She is my consultant when i am no more able to solve my life's puzzles anymore. This list goes on...........
In short I found one of best personalities in her. She shouts, she scolds, she make you angry but she cares and thats the most important thing.
Although I sometimes feel that she is extra sentimental and emotional but I know that no one is perfect.
Conclusion remarks: I owes a lot to u shilpi. I could get such a good marks in my BTECH bcoz of you, I could clear CAT with 98+ %ile bcoz of u and a lot more.
I can never forget you and I wont let you do so also. [;)]

Prasoon: As his name implies, he a flower really. He can make the environment around him such a beautiful place to live in that you wont like to leave it. Powerful and impressive personality with confidence and smile on his face.
We have been friends since our childhood. We used to study together for our exams and then for Btech entrance. Luckily or Unluckily we got into same engineering clg but different branches. He taught me to handle tough situations with smile and not to get out of control in any not-so-friendly situation.

Dinesh: Dinesh-'The Great Dealer' of all time. Yes I love to call him by this name only. I have not seen such a convincing power(dealing) in many people. He loves to help others and a very hard worker(although I personally feel that he should have worked a little harder in Btech).
Are one more thing, he a avid drinker and can drink as much as 4 human beings.[;)]
I am sure that where ever he goes, he will be successful. Love u jaan.

Saurabh: Ek number ka nihayat hi bakwaas dealing karne wala dost but meri 2nd jaan hai ye. Bahut hi caring and helpfull guy. Bcoz of his capabilities he is already reached at a position where we think ourselves after a couple of years. But he is a bit out of control guy. He gets angry for small things and behave like a small kid. but we all love him very much. I really enjoy being wid him and listen to all his crap.[:)]

Things to carry at any Bschool

1. Even though I didn't get passed in each test conducted by my life I still maintained to live happily. I am creating this blog juz to let you guys know a bit bout my life.
When I applied for B.TECH. entrance exam of state level exam, suddenly govt came up with 50% paid seats in all premier govt engg institutes and "luckily" I managed to secure a rank at which free seats were not available. My father didn't have enough money to get a paid seat. Finally I landed up in AMU. The test gets over and all this paid seat/free seat funda was waved from next year as if that was created only for me. That was juz tip of the iceberg. I have been facing such tests through out my life. Somehow I managed to complete my B.Tech. with decent marks but with a bad impression on most of my profs as I never quit teasing them. I always try to relate every theory to the practical examples which was not possible in every case and this often ends with kicking me out of the class.
then again in the final year of my Btech I conclude that I shouldn't stop after graduation rather go for MBA. I prep well, had CL(Career Launcher) classes, got decent scores in CL's mocks and finally on 'The Day' I couldn't performed. The result ? Pathetic. got 58%ile in one of the section. Didn't get through any of the 'Good' institute.
Now, Placements in the campus have started. TCS was the 1st company to visit. Sit and got thru. Was not allowed for CSC/HCL etc. Was very impressed with TCS ppt and work which they have portrait there. Finally joined TCS. after training in coimbatore(TN), they asked for preferences of joining location. DELHI, MUMBAI , PUNE were my 3 pref in that order. All my friends also applied in the same manner. Finally joining day came and I got KOLKATA( was that a option. i never saw that) with a couple of friends; rest all got DELHI/NOIDA/GURGAON.
OK, with accepted type feeling I reached kolkata. I was trained in .NET and finally got project in MS Excel and Access (now that was frustrating). Any how managed to work and got a little bit of .NET work in mids. then after missing a chance of taking CAT again in 2006, I planned to prep for 2006. Started prep sincerely, CAT was on 18-NOV. In july I was asked if I want to go onsite(US), $'s started blinking in my eyes. I say YES without giving it a 2nd thought. scrapped all my prep and dreams of MBA for some tiny '$s' ( This was one of my biggest mistakes in life. In other word, in this test of life I failed by a large margin). Reached US on 1st-SEPT, enjoy there for a month. My stay was supposed to be long term. It was only after a month when I realize that I got failed in the last test of life and then decided to go back and take the test again(Improvement exam :) ). My manager was not ready to send me back, had a discussion(Fight in exact word) and finally I survived. Came back to india on 22nd OCT. 25 days in hand and I have to do so many things. I used to take leave from office more frequently. study very hard till late nights, Saturdays and Sundays. I was doing whatever I could. Finally 'The Day' came and although I did pretty well but repeats some of the previous mistakes and results ? NO IIM call ( later IIM-shillong called me). But finally got thru IMT-G(FIN) and got waiting in NITIE and MDI-PGPM.
Got thru NITIE-IM also. will be joining thr.

IIM S GD/PI-2008

Hi All,
had my gd/PI today in kolkata.

It was a case study: A company has outsourced its IT dev to an IT company. Everyone had a lot of things to say but no one was ready to listen. Complete Fish market. Only good thing happened to me was that after trying to speak in first 2 mins, I didn't contributed to Fishy market. Tried to manage the group 2-3 times but after a silence of 10 secs, gp again started with Fish Marketting[ ].
Finally they cut short the discussion in 6-7 mins and asked everyone to summarize it in 1 min. Then submit the written summary in 2 mins. These were the only instance when I can show my opinions.

Waited for 2.5 hours for PI as I was the last in the group.
I had to reschedule my PI before some other guys in my gp as My flight got preponed.
There were three panelist: P1,P2(both from IMT), P3- from industry
P1: Why did you reschedule your PI slot?
Me: My flight got preponed
P1: Why didn't you book a flight from nest day?(asked this ques very harshly and trying to create stress)
Me: Started explaning my job responsiblities and told how critical work I am handling at this time so don't want to take xtra leave and harm my company. Explained it a bit. (they were happy)
P2: Why MBA after such a good job?
Me: Give gyan on business knowledge and value addition bla bla...
P2: Hobbies ?
Me: Cooking, playing games etc....
P2: Cooking is your hobby or necessity of life?
Me: Give gyan that cooking is my hobby. Explained the IMT strengths about industry as well as international exposure. How this can help me in my long term goal to set up my own venture bla bla....
P3: Suppose you din't get selected in any of institutes then?
Me: Told about my backup plans. Got a stay in NITIE MDP hostel.
Hostel was very old and not properly maintained.
Room was big and so 4 candidates were accomodated in that single room. The worst part was that was only one washroom and we have to report at 8 AM. so got to start pretty early(I hate it).
Anyways, process got started on time. Everything was maintained by students only. Gave presentations on the courses and college.
Document verified. moved into GD with a gp size 10.

GD topic: Behave like ROMANS once you are in ROME.
Gp was very good in terms of discipline and discussion as a whole. Had a very nice discussion. I made relevent entries 4-5 times.

Got in the waiting room. Now the story starts. The panel I was assigned to was 'so called GOOD panel'. Now there were a number of students having evening flight/train for their return journey. As the process was a bit late they were worried about their return. I was waiting outside the PI room as my number was next. Then from somewhere one guy with NITIE senior came and told about his return flight and asked my permission for having his PI b4 me. "YEAH you can" was my reply. Now as soon as this guy entered 4-5 guys come and asked the same. So, eventually my scheduled was shifted from 3PM to 4:30PM. ( now that is called as cost of altruism )
Finally I got in at 4:30PM.
There were 7-8 panelist but only 3-4 were asking Qs rest were just watching.
P1: So Chandan, you have been waiting for a long time outside this room but didn't get chance to get in. Isn't it irritating?
Me: I knew this Q was fired to trap me, I answered it cleverly and said I always help people if I could.
I was asked by other panelist also on the same topic like "Why did you let those guys come b4 u" etc etc....

P2: So what do you expect from us to ask you about?
Me: Now that was really unexpected. I told them about general Qs asked in PIs like 'Why MBA' type
P2: But why would we ask these Qs?
Me: Here I got the point.[ ]. I told them that you want to know me so that you can judge whether I am up to level of institute or not.
P2: Yes, so now tell me why should we take you?
Me: answered it confidently. had a discussion on the same.
Finally was asked about my success and failure till now.

That's it. The PI last for around 30-35mins.
Overall Good performance.

--------

Got waitlisted for PGDIM(#23)
